A Guide to Summer in the UK for Chevening Scholars

Chevening Social Media Ambassador Haikaeli Gilliard, currently pursuing a master's in advanced health and care management at Swansea University, shares her ideal way to spend a sunny weekend in the UK.

"When I was still in my home country, I used to see people on TV shows and in romantic comedies getting all excited for summer. I didn't understand the hype back then, but now I'm one of those people eagerly waiting for the sunny weather to arrive. I'm ready to soak up the sun and chat with anyone who's willing to listen about how amazing the weather has been!

Living through the long British winter has taught me to truly appreciate the sun. And interestingly, I've also grown fond of the rain (thanks to the Welsh weather!)

If you're about to begin your Chevening year, you probably have a long list of activities you want to experience during your time in the UK. To help you out, I've gathered five summer weekend activities that you can enjoy alone or with friends.

Although summer usually calls for outdoor activities, I understand that some people may prefer the indoors or a combination of both. So, I've made sure to include activities that can be adjusted to cater to both outdoor enthusiasts and those who prefer cozy indoor settings.

Let the magic begin!

1. Attend a festival or fair

During this time of year, many businesses are showcasing their best products and services at various festivals and fairs.

These popular events often feature food, music, culture, and celebrations of public holidays. For instance, I recently attended the Swansea Classic Vehicle Show, where over 400 vehicles and thousands of spectators gathered to admire the beauty and evolution of car models. I had the opportunity to engage with passionate vintage car owners, who shared their knowledge and enthusiasm.

To find events and communities that interest you, simply search on social media platforms or use Google. You can also join mailing lists on websites like Eventbrite to receive notifications about festivals and events in your area.

2. Get your body moving

Engage in physical activities such as running, walking, hiking, dancing, skating, or cycling—whatever appeals to you!

Exercise offers numerous benefits, including boosting your mood and improving your overall health. Additionally, going outdoors provides extra rewards, such as absorbing vitamin D and breathing in fresh air.

However, moving your body indoors is also an option, which I have been doing for quite some time now. Occasionally, I participate in group exercise activities as well. One of my absolute favorite group activities is attending salsa dance classes organized by the Center for African Entrepreneurship (CAE) in Swansea.

3. Engage in artistic endeavors

Art has a remarkable way of soothing you, unlocking your inner creativity, and broadening your perspective.

Consider visiting an exhibition, taking an art class, going to the theater, hosting an art session with friends, or coloring in the comfort of your own room. You can purchase art supplies from your local supermarket and invite friends over, or enjoy the experience on your own .

Pinterest is a great resource for finding a plethora of arts and crafts ideas to get involved with over the weekend.

As an art curator, I also appreciate visiting art galleries and engaging with the exhibitions or art programs they offer.

4. Spend time with friends

One of the best parts of my Chevening experience has been forming friendships with people from around the globe and becoming more culturally aware.

I have both hosted and been hosted for dinners and game nights, which has allowed me to try new foods and learn different customs.

Recently, my friends and I organized a picnic at Rhossili Bay, which is famous for its breathtaking views and vast sandy beach. We brought snacks and games and had a fantastic time outdoors, catching up with each other.

5. Connect with nature

Consider purchasing an indoor plant to nurture or taking a stroll to a local park or public gardens.

Recently, my dear friends, a delightful couple, introduced me to Clyne Gardens in Swansea. This remarkable destination, recognized as a UNESCO heritage site, spans approximately 50 acres and showcases an exquisite assortment of flowers and trees from various corners of the globe. The Glynn Vivian Family established this breathtaking site in 1921.

If you're not particularly fond of flowers and trees, perhaps you might enjoy a trip to the beach, the moor, or the mountains. Regardless of your preference, the UK offers something for everyone!

These are just a few suggestions for an enjoyable summer weekend as a Chevening Scholar in the UK., as you'll soon discover, the opportunities are limitless!
